This event will be held at the State Theatre in Traverse City, MI  on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at 10:00 am.  The feature film for families will be “Snow Dogs” and this movie will be only .25 cents!

The doors will open to the public at 9:00 am to offer families the chance to obtain Community Resource Information for families who need information on where and how to obtain dental care for their family.  Traverse Health Clinic will have staff available to answer questions.

The Traverse Health Clinic staff will perform a short, fun dental skit right before the start of the movie and also show a Goofy cartoon to help educate families and children on why brushing and flossing is important.  The State Theatre has graciously offered to host this event for the community. 

Traverse Health Clinic will be providing Tooth Care Kits (toothbrush, paste, floss) to everyone and they will be given out after the matinee.

Local volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants will provide oral health classroom education and provide an oral screening of the children, with parent consent.  All children in visited classrooms will receive a tooth care kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, floss).

Beginning its fourth year of directly accessing children in schools, Traverse Health Clinic is interested in providing awareness to families about the dental programs and services offered in our community.  There are children in our area who are in need of assistance.  Of parents who report an inability to obtain dental care for their children, one-half report lack of insurance as the main reason.  Twenty-five percent of the children screened in our 5 county areas during the last school year showed obvious signs of decay or urgent needs.

Traverse Bay Give Kids A Smile Program visits elementary children in five counties (Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau) educating them on the importance of proper dental care and conducting visual oral exams.  Last year, twenty five percent of those children screened showed visual signs of decay or other problems.  Some of these children did not have a toothbrush of their own at home.  Each child in the program receives a “Tooth Care Kit” containing toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss.  This year we will need to prepare 4,000 Tooth Care Kits.  Please help to provide 4,000 local children with a toothbrush of their own.
